Course Description: Congratulations! You have made it to Algebra 1! This course is considered “on-target” for 9th graders. Freshmen who pass Algebra 1 will take Pre-Calculus (college level math) as a senior. Passing this course as a sophomore will ensure you complete Algebra II your senior year, the final math class required for graduation.
Classroom Philosophy: "Have Courage and Be Kind." Science shows we learn 10% of what we read, 20% of what we hear, 70% of what we discuss, and 95% of what we teach. During class time, you are either working individually, asking for help, or offering help. In this class, asking questions and offering ideas is just as important as having the answers during group activities. If you master a concept before your peers, help others understand this concept.
Algebra Tutoring: Tutoring for Algebra 1 is offered in room E206 everyday after school. Students who have a D or F should expect to attend tutoring twice a week. Students with a C should attend tutoring weekly. Students who are absent should attend tutoring to catch up on material they missed. I am not available before school.
Attendance Policy: If you are more than 10 minutes late, it is counted as an absence. Students who leave class early and/or leave without permission will be marked absent and referred to administration. If you are not in your seat by the time the bell rings, you are considered tardy. If a student receives 5 tardies in a quarter, parents will be contacted and you will be referred to the office for discipline. If you miss a day, you are responsible for learning the material and completing the classwork listed on your unit calendar. If you are going to be gone on the day of a test, you must schedule to take it outside of class (see: Algebra tutoring). If you miss the review day and new material is not covered, expect to take the test. Review days are an advantage for those who attend.
Supplies: Most necessary classroom supplies will be provided by you and your classmates. During the first week of school, you will sign up for something to bring. The following supplies are required:
TI-30XS Scientific Calculator
Pencil and Erasers (math is always done in pencil)
Quad-Ruled Notebook exclusively for Math
Grading:
70% Tests
20% Classwork and Homework
10% Ice Cubes
Test corrections can raise your test grade up to a 75%. All students who have test corrections will stay during AT and be paired with a tutor. You will receive ½ credit for all corrective work.
Homework is due the class period after it is assigned, be may be accepted up until the day of the exam. I may choose to hold students with missing assignments for AT. Late work will only be accepted will previous approval. No homework will be accepted after the unit exam.
Ice cubes are quizzes given on Friday and due with corrections on Monday. As Ice Cube the rapper once said, “You better check yo self before you wreck yo self.” Ice Cubes lost between Friday and Monday will earn a zero.
Rules and Expectations:
Respect: Students causing disturbances or being disrespectful will be immediately removed from class. If you have a question or concern about a policy or decision, discuss it with me individually. Achievement time is my time to use as I see fit. Restroom breaks should wait until work-time, except for emergencies. Food/drink is allowed as long as you clean up after yourself.
Responsibility: If you miss a day, you are responsible for learning the material and completing the classwork listed on your calendar. Students who cheat will receive a zero for the assignment, a recommendation for removal from activities, a meeting with an administrator, and a call home. A zero on a test may cause a student to fail the class. It’s not worth the risk.
Behavior: Per school policy, cell phones are not allowed on campus. Therefore, headphones and/or cell phone use is prohibited during lecture time. If cell phones create a distraction during work-time, they will be confiscated. Students who regularly have issues with cell phone use will require parental intervention.
Materials: Please return all borrowed supplies. Chromebooks need to be charged and brought to class daily, and are to be used for instructional purposes only. No video recording or photos allowed.
